Dipa Karmakar – India’s first woman gymnast at Olympics [Sports]
Dipa karmakar has created history by becoming the first woman gymnast to represent India in the 2016 Summer Olympics to be held at Rio. The 22-year old gymnast hailing from the Indian state of Tripura secured 13.366 and 12.566 points in beam and floor exercises correspondingly in the final qualifiers of the Olympic Test events in Rio de Janerio.
Dipa is listed 79th among the individual competitors in the list of women’s artistic gymnast. Aside from being first Indian woman gymnast, Dipa will represent India in gymnastics after 52 years. The last time India participated in Gymnastics was during the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Till now, 11 gymnasts (all men) have represented India in Olympics, six during 1964, three in 1956 and two in 1952. Ironically, no test events/qualifiers were conducted for participation in the main events.

🏆 Born on 1993, Dipa was pushed to gymnastics by her father Dulal karmakar who was a weightlifting coach.
🏆 As a child she had a fear of falling down and hurting herself which she eventually overcame in the coming years.
🏆 Dipa started training under Bisbeshwar Nandi and has been her coach since.
🏆 Till now, Dipa has 77 medals which include 67 gold medals, in national, state and international events.
🏆 Won the bronze medal in 2014 CWG* held at Glasgow and also became the first Indian gymnast to get a medal at CWG*.
🏆 Finished fourth in the 2014 Asian games held at Incheon.
