Effective ways to become a better batsman
Hitting a boundary or a six, scoring a hundred, consistently making runs seems easy while watching but it’s not as easy as it looks. Batting is an art and being a craftsman in that requires an expertise in a wide range of skills and enormous experience. The below mentioned methods would help aspiring batsmen become better and effective batsmen over a period of time.
FOCUS ON THE BALL
“Eyes on the ball till the last second and allow the body to naturally respond.” is the simplest trick of all. But mastering it requires a great deal of temperament, patience, self-confidence and a dedicated work routine. Playing throw downs, batting sessions in nets, even giving close-in catches with the bat are some work routines that will improve your hand-eye coordination.
PRACTICE IN OPEN NETS
Have open nets batting sessions as much as closed nets sessions. Closed nets sessions enhances your hand-eye coordination whereas playing in open nets helps you identify the following areas.
“Your range of strokes”
“Your ability to find gaps”
“Your coordination with your batting partner”
UNDERSTAND YOUR PARTNER
Matches are won collectively not individually. Even a single man show requires supportive effort from others. Understanding your batting partner and a sound communication between the partners helps both the batsmen complement each other. It allows the batsmen to plan and pace their innings which automatically leads to rotation of strike between the partners (disturbing bowler’s rhythm), consolidating the innings and building big partnerships.
UTILIZE THE NON-STRIKER’S END (BOWLER’S END)
Every successful batsman utilizes the non-striker’s end as much as he utilizes the batting end. Observing from the bowling end allows you to understand the nature of the wicket (slow paced/fast paced), effectiveness of the bowler (bounce, spin, lateral movement etc.), strengths and limitations of your batting partner. Armed with these you could formulate your own ways of effectively countering them.
THINK OUT OF THE BOX
Be creative, fearless and daring enough in exploring new ideas, strategies and techniques. Successful ones help you identify your strength, failures your limitations & weakness. As long as you have the hunger to face challenges, there is a default up-gradation of your skills thereby making you a better one than before.
