Tamil Movies released during the first half of 90’s (1990-94) saw the soaring popularity of Rajinikanth among the audience. At the same time Kamalhassan was smartly alternating between serious and commercial ventures. It also saw emergence of the fresh talents like A.R.Rahman(music), Shankar(direction), Prabhu Deva(dance & acting), Vijay(actor), Ajith(actor), Vasanth(director) etc.. Similarly Ilaiyaraja was at his all-time best, senior artistes like Sathyaraj, Vijaykanth and Sarathkumar stabilized their position as commercially saleable stars.

Anjali – 1990
India’s official entry to Oscars, Anjali is about the life of terminally ill child (Baby Shamili) and how her parents (Raguvaran, Revathi) handle it. This movie was Maestro Ilaiyaraaja’s 500th musical composition. Initially planned as a sequel to Mouna Ragam (1986) with Mohan and Revathi in the lead roles, Maniratnam later had to opt Raguvaran and change the story line due to Mohan’s unavailability. The movie was a box office success and went on to win three National awards.
