National Award Winning Movie, Visaranai is India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards (Oscars). The national award winner made the cut among the 29 Indian films which included Sultan, Sairat, Fan and Bajirao. Incidentally, Visaranai’s official entry makes it the first Tamil movie after Kamal Hassan’s Hey Ram which was India’s Entry to Oscars in 2000 (Check out the full list of Indian Movie Submissions for Oscars).
Adapted from M.Chandrakumar’s novel, Lockup; Visaranai (Interrogation) is a cop-drama that deals with abuse, exploitation, double-dealing and brutality meted out by the law-enforcement officials. Produced by actor Dhanush, Visaranai is directed by Vetrimaran (Aadukalam fame) featuring Dinesh and Samuthirakani in lead roles.
Visaranai won the Best feature film in Tamil, Best Supporting Actor (Samuthirakani) and Best Editor (Kishore Te) at the 63rd National Film Awards. The movie also won the Amnesty International Italia Award during its premiere at the 72nd Venice Film Festival (Horizons section). Visaranai released in India on Feb 5, 2016 and opened to positive response and reviews from critics.
60 countries have so far submitted their entries for the foreign-language Oscar with October 3, 2016 being the deadline. Some Notable Foreign entries for the Oscars include the Clash (Egypt), Sparrow (Iceland). Visaranai’s Oscar glory depends on the announcement of The official Nomination List in January 2017.
The 2017 Oscars is scheduled to take place on February 26, 2017 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles.
