A Guide to BS- VI Emission Norms

Reading Time: 3 minutes

BS-VI refers to the Bharat Stage Emission Standards (BSES) that are modelled along the lines of the Euro 6 norms found in Europe. The Government of India instituted these Bharat Stage Standards to regulate the output of air pollutants from internal combustion engines including motor vehicles. As of now, the Bharat IV emission norms are in enforcement across the country. However, according to a recent Supreme Court Judgement, the sale and registration of motor vehicles abiding by the emission standard of Bharat Stage-IV will be banned from 1st April 2020. Moreover, the Government of India has decided to skip BS-V norms and adopt BS-VI emission norms post the prohibition on BS-IV compliant motor vehicles.

The difference between BS-IV and BS-VI norms

The major difference between Bharat Stage IV and Bharat Stage VI norms is the extent of Sulphur. BS-IV fuels contain 50 parts per million (ppm) Sulphur, whereas the BS-VI grade fuel only has 10 ppm Sulphur. BS VI can reduce the particle pollution in diesel cars by 80 percent. Additionally, the enforcement of the new emission norms will bring down nitrogen oxides from diesel cars and petrol cars by 70% and 25% respectively. The BS VI emission norms will also make On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) mandatory for all vehicles. OBD device informs the vehicle owner about the efficiency of their motor vehicle.

Effects of BS-VI emission norms

Automobile companies will have to bear the high manufacturing cost associated with BS-VI compliant motor vehicles. This increased cost would be due to the use of upgraded technology for reduced emissions.

On the other hand, customers who buy Bharat Stage VI-compliant vehicles will have to spend more as the automobile companies will pass on the additional cost to the buyers.

The high-grade fuel required for the BS VI compliant vehicles will be comparatively more expensive. Though the state companies don’t intend to recover the incremental cost incurred in producing higher grade fuel from customers immediately, they may do it once the BS-VI petrol and diesel begin selling across the country.

A four-wheeler is the most preferred vehicle for the daily commute in cities as well as the rural areas across the country. However, the alarming rise in pollution due to four-wheelers is a growing concern for the people as well as the Government of India.  Exposure to air pollution can result in respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, which is estimated to be the cause for 6.2 lakh early deaths in 2010. This is where the Bharat Stage Emission norms can be of great help as they bring down the pollution level significantly.

So if you are the owner of a four-wheeler, make sure that your vehicle abides by the emission norms. Lastly, do not forget to get your four-wheeler insured.
