The word ‘Arthritis’ is derived from two Greek words ‘arthron’ meaning joint and ‘itis’ for ‘inflammation’. Meaning thereby, that arthritis is inflammation of joints of a human body. This leads to stiffness in the joints, arising pain, and also restricts bodily movement. It intensifies with an increase in age.

The most common type of arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Other types include psoriatic arthritis, gout, systemic lupus erythematosus often known as SLE or lupus, and ankylosing spondylitis. Near about 14% of the total population of India is suffering from arthritis. This is a huge amount and it has become so common that one must be aware of all the causes, symptoms, treatment as well as prevention of such condition.

Stiffness and muscle tension are the major symptoms of arthritis. Loss of flexibility and swelling, pain due to change in weather, Bouchard nodes, or the bony lumps. These symptoms are found in individuals suffering from osteoarthritis. In case the individuals are suffering from rheumatoid arthritis have these symptoms of inflammation and pain in any joint, it is usually symmetrical. Stiffness and pain after sleeping or when that joint is not in use. Lumps are also noticed on the body. These lumps are also a sign. Fatigue is a common symptom which we usually ignore.


Studies suggest that some varieties of arthritis are genetic that is it runs in families. And other causes are a chemical imbalance in the body or even due to the immune system which is over-active.

Age plays an important factor, as the risk of arthritis increases with age. Along with age, one’s gender is equally important, as studies suggest that women have a higher risk of having rheumatoid arthritis than men. On the other hand, generally, men have gout.

Previous injuries, especially joint injuries the ones who have had any joint injury in their life have a higher risk of arthritis than ones who haven’t. Obesity is one of the major causes of arthritis. Due to increased weight, the knee joint and hip joints become weak, and because of this the risk increases.

Treatment and Prevention

There is no absolute cure for this condition. The only thing that one can aim for is the reduction of the symptoms of inflammation and pain with the help of physical exercise, medication, and physiotherapy.

When all these remedies are exhausted and the pain and inflammation are still persisting or has rather increased there are other treatments that are also available, some of them are surgeries. The chronic knee procedures treatment and knee replacement deal with patients having a severe condition.

To prevent this condition the basic thing that any human being can do is maintain a healthy lifestyle and a moderate BMI. This is the least an individual can do for a healthy future. This can be achieved only if light exercise is incorporated into one’s daily routine. A little yoga is always harmless. Strength training helps strengthen the muscles which helps in relieving pain and also reduces stiffness.
