Knees are the most vulnerable joints in our body.Knee pain and knee injuries are common, especially as the knee joint has to take rather a large amount of stress by holding the whole body weight and by strenuous exercise.

While ageing and being overweight increase the risk, a large number of knee injuries happen during sports activities such as football, rugby, skiing, tennis or squash. Another joint replacement surgery is the shoulder joint replacement in India which is known to relieve severe pain in many cases.

In the knee, there are four bones connected by four ligaments – The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) and the medial collateral ligament (MCL)

Most knee injuries affect the ACL, accounting for about 40 percent of all sports-related knee injuries. Soon after the injury the injured experiences severe pain accompanied with swelling of the knee. The knee is also unstable with no motion and becomes very tender. This tenderness can be felt at the joint which creates discomfort to walk. A torn ligament severely limits knee movement. This leads to the inability to stand, twist or turn the leg. One may choose to undergo surgery to repair such a torn ligament which is known to be most effective in repairing ligament tears.

Prior to the surgery, patients usually wait for the swelling to go down and for the full range of movement to return, which could take up to three weeks.

The most common surgery method is to remove the remains of the ligament and replace them with a tendon from another part of the leg. The graft tissue can come from the patient directly (autograft) or from a donor (allograft).

The surgeryis usually conducted under general or spinal anesthetics. During this, the surgeon first assesses the damage, removes the graft tissue and in some cases uses synthetic graft tissue. Following insertion, it will be secured to the bone with stitches, screws or staples. When finished, the surgeon tests the movement range and stability of the knee before stitching up the incisions.

In the majority of cases, knee ligament surgery can fully restore the functioning of the knee. However, there might still be some swelling and pain involved. The recovery time usually takes around six months

Knee replacement surgery, like any surgery, carries risks. They include: Infection Blood clots in the leg vein or lungs Heart attack Stroke Nerve damage

Preventing torn knee ligaments can be difficult, as they can affect anyone and are rather unpredictable.

Exercise is generally recommended, as this helps into strengthen the muscles supporting the knee joint and could help to avoid injuries and knee ligament surgery.

More than 90 percent of people who undergo total knee replacement surgery experience a significant reduction of knee pain and return to their normal daily activities.
