Top Young Players To Look Out For: Euro 2020

Euro 2020 is fast approaching, and it’s time to start getting excited!

The tournament will take place between June 12th and July 12th in twelve different cities across Europe. Top young players from all over the continent will be competing for their country.

This article provides a list of some of the most promising youngsters who could make a name for themselves at Euro 2020.

Phil Foden

Foden was a star player for England when they won the Under-17 World Cup in India in 2017. He comes into Euro 2020 as both a winning captain and one of 21 years old. He played as a left-winger for Manchester City in the English Premier League, scoring 16 goals to help them win the top spot.

Foden, who enjoys fishing with his father in his free time, made his full England debut last September and scored against Iceland during November’s Nations League.

After the likes of Juan Carlos Valeron, David Silva, and Pedro Rodriguez, Pedri is another star to emerge from the Canary Islands to break into the Spain set-up.

The 18-year-old midfielder, who hails from Tenerife and came to Barcelona last year from Las Palmas, has a silky touch. He followed Andres Iniesta as his idol and even reproduced similar success when he was able to make his debut in the Spanish La Liga.

Jamal Musiala

The 18-year-old German international midfielder, son of a British Nigerian father and a German mother, spent his childhood in England (Stuttgart) but could have played for the English national team.

The midfielder has played for both Germany and England at the youth level. “I have a heart for Germany and a heart for England,” he said earlier this year.

However, since joining Bayern Munich, he has committed his international future to Germany and was given his first call-up for the national team.

Matthijs de Ligt

21-year old Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt is the Netherlands’ most important player, with Virgil van Dijk ruled out for Euro 2020. When he appeared to a groin injury in training at the weekend, there was concern over his fitness.

The Netherlands needs their youngest player, De Ligt, who captain Ajax to Champions League semis in 2019 before being sold to Juve for a world-record $84.2 million fee at just 19.

A symbol of the new Dutch generation that missed both Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup, De Ligt made his international debut at 17.

Jeremy Doku

There are questions surrounding the fitness of Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard; two established stars in Roberto Martinez’s Belgian lineup. But there is also hope that Doku might be able to step up for Belgium at Euro 2020.

The winger who recently turned 19 broke through in Belgium and has made his full international debut at the age of 18 just before Rennes paid a club record 26 million euros ($31.6m) to sign him. Doku needed time to adapt but finished the season well with the French side as he can be a threat on either flank.

Joao Felix

Felix, 21 years old and three years out of Atletico Madrid’s academy, has become one of the five most expensive players in history after Benfica sold him for 126 million euros ($142m) last year.

Felix (capable of playing on either flank or through the middle in attack) was fresh from helping Atletico Madrid win La Liga, and he is a symbol of Portugal’s new generation that will support Cristiano Ronaldo as Fernando Santos’ team defends the title they won in France 2016.

It is clear that this year’s Euro 2020 will be one in which many young players are eager to make a name for themselves. With the likes of England, Germany, and France having some very talented youngsters, it will be interesting to see who emerges from these countries as key players in next summer’s tournament. Top young players like Foden, Pedri, Musiala, and Felix could be some of the best players to watch in this summer’s Euros.
